about

In ‘Arctic Blood and Ice’, the voices tell a story as the instruments provide sound imagery reflecting what the vocals are saying. The piano enters with a driving, continuous eighth note pattern that carries throughout the song. The piano is guiding the listener through this story as it moves, like a hunter, through a difficult terrain - always leading us forward. The strings and vibraphone are painting an image of the icy and vast landscape. When the narrator sings of 'hunting' the piano switches to an arpeggiated theme of seeking, searching high and low for something new, possibly a new form of expression.

Inuit song culture is adaptive and humble. Inuit have many songs about hunting and a tradition of adapting songs over generations. Inuit sing about hunting for a song. This playful irony is a way to demonstrate humility in the continual pursuit for food, connection and creativity. We are moved by this elegant idea and it provided inspiration for Post-Normal’s new composition ‘Arctic Blood and Ice’.

Halfway through the piece ‘Arctic Blood and Ice’ is a sudden and dramatic contrast in mood. A key change and meter change (from quadruple to triple meter) quickly show us that something is vastly different. The piano quiets down for the first time in the piece, pausing for reflection, sustained by an eerie calm. This is where Sedna's theme is first introduced. Her motif, which is more of a cry, is first heard on a higher vibraphone sound, clear and chilling. Simultaneously, lower vibraphone notes creep up, like bubbles surfacing from the deep sea as Sedna stirs. The moment occurs when air bubbling transforms into a tumultuous vortex of water. The pianos return in urgency, first in unison then breaking into a harmony of a third. Sedna's cry is sung with voice as a melody with no words.

The narrators of ‘Arctic Blood and Ice’ explain the abrupt change in the sea's behavior paralleled by musical transformation. The ice is melting, shown as the bass and piano continue their constant driving eighth note patterns, always increasing in intensity. The tone is a sad one as the water builds up and ice disappears causing a domino effect to the environment around. Sedna's voice is again heard above all the chaos that builds. Melodies are layered one on top of the other creating a final bittersweet counterpoint - a warning to us all about the power of nature and the extent of global environmental change.
